WHAT: Regional Stakeholder Consultation for Southern Africa on the Development of the Multisectoral Nutrition Policy Framework and Funding Target for Nutrition Investment in Africa.

WHERE: Gaborone, Botswana

WHO: The African Union Commission (AUC) Directorate of Health and Humanitarian Affairs, in collaboration with the Republic of Botswana and the African Development Bank Group’s African Leaders for Nutrition (ALN).

WHY: In July 2022, the African Union (AU) through Decision EX.CL/Dec.1178 (XLI) called on Member States to prioritize increased domestic financial investment in food and nutrition security while promoting multisectoral programming. This consultation aims to gather insights from key stakeholders to develop a Multisectoral Nutrition Policy Framework and Funding Target for Nutrition Investment in Africa that will ensure resource allocation for nutrition programming.

OBJECTIVES: The main objectives of the regional consultation include:

  1. Establishing a clear understanding of funding sources and financial requirements to inform the development of a comprehensive financing strategy for multisectoral nutrition interventions.
  2. Generating sector-specific recommendations for the Multisectoral Nutrition Policy Framework and Funding Target.
  3. Strengthening collaboration among stakeholders to ensure effective nutrition programming.

PARTICIPANTS: The consultation will bring together representatives from Member States from the Southern Africa region including Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe; the Southern African Development Community (SADC); the African Union Commission (AUC); Africa Development Bank Group’s African Leaders for Nutrition (ALN); and other technical and development partners.

AGENDA: The consultation will feature in-depth discussions and group work by sectors such as Health, Nutrition, Agriculture, Education, and Finance. The detailed agenda includes plenary presentations, group discussions, and sector-specific workshops.
