15 Civic Tech Organizations selected finalists to drive citizen-led transformation.

Fifteen civic tech organizations will receive €15,000 in funding from the African Union Civic Tech Fund initiative to enhance and scale the citizen engagement projects through innovative solutions and digital technologies. The finalists were selected following the launch of a call in April 2024, which attracted over 400 applications from across Africa. following the call in April, which attracted over 400 applications from across Africa.

The 12-month initiative catalyses and scales innovative civic tech solutions that harness the power of technology to drive citizen-led transformative action across the African continent. Through this initiative, dynamic African organizations have an opportunity to undergo capacity building training to drive innovative, inclusive, and sustainable growth for our continent, contributing towards a truly citizen-driven development agenda. Five organisations were selected from East Africa, five organizations from West Africa, two from Southern, two from Central Africa and one from Northern Africa.

The finalist organisation are; Advokc Foundation (Nigeria, West Africa), Estheria Ventures(Kenya, East Africa), Associação Empoderando Moçambique, (Mozambigue, Southern Africa), The Demography Project (Kenya, East Africa), CodeVision Limited (Uganda, East Africa), The Restored Heart Foundation (Nigeria, West Africa), Wote Margin Tanzania - No Taka Hub, (Tanzania, East Africa), ONG Ouvrir Les Horizons (Guinea, West Africa)

The rest are; ALCOFORD CORPORATION (Togo, West Africa), Big Family 360(Nigeria,West Africa), Digital Woman Uganda (Uganda, East Africa), Réseau des Jeunes Leaders pour l’innovation et la lutte contre le changement climatique au Tchad (Chad, Central Africa), Congo Report Media (Congo, Central Africa), Idaraty (Tunisia, North Africa) and Pulego Technologies (Pty) Ltd (South Africa, Southern Africa)

African Union Commission Director of Women, Gender, and Youth Prudence Nonkululeko Ngwenya, underscored the African Union’s commitment to support youth-led innovations to address societal challenges. “We are happy to welcome these 15 organisations to advance citizen engagement in their communities and countries. Through a facilitated journey of capacity building and with the generous financial support of GIZ, the African Union Civic Tech Fund will promote citizen engagement and drive digital innovation in democratic governance and development spaces. We recognise civic tech initiatives as influential catalysts for the continent’s transformation, contributing towards a truly citizen-driven development agenda. This is Central to our mission as the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate”, she said.

The AU Civic Tech Fund is a pan-African initiative launched by the African Union’s Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate (WGYD) in partnership with GIZ African Union to advance the continent’s framework, AU’s Agenda 2063, 1 Million Next Level Initiative, and the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa. The Grant process of the AU Civic Tech Fund 2.0 will be managed by continental partners, the Civic Tech Innovation Network (CTIN) and Ushahidi.
