AU - ICRC joint event: A high-level policy dialogue on Missing, Separated and Dead Migrants

INVITATION TO THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

What: A joint AU-ICRC event that seeks to create a platform to enhance awareness of the fate of missing migrants and their families and to promote a coherent and effective African approach to the issue. It will bring together states and key institutional stakeholders. The event will also feature testimony from affected families.

When: Tuesday, August 30, 2022 13:30 -17:30 EAT. The event will be hybrid event.

Where: Small CH3, Multi-purpose Hall, African Union HQ, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Who: The event will feature keynote speeches by the AUC Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, H.E. Amb Minata Samaté Cessouma, by the Vice President of the ACHPR, Commissioner Maya Sahli Fadel, and by the ICRC Regional Director for Africa, Patrick Youssef. Representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Institute for Strategic Studies (ISS), ICRC, and Switzerland will participate in a panel discussion. 

Why: The aim of the cooperation between AU and ICRC is to cooperate on humanitarian issues related to armed conflict, promote a better knowledge of, and respect for, the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) by AU member states and provide legal support to the AU Commission for the mainstreaming of IHL into decision and policies.

Participants: The event will be attended by high level AU officials, RECs, diplomatic representatives of African and non-African states, the AU Member states, representatives of international and regional organizations.
