Addis Ababa – Ethiopia, Thursday January 16, 2019. HE Mr. Kwesi Quartey, the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union received HE Mr. Salah Francis ELHAMDI the Ambassador designate of Algeria to Ethiopia, and Permanent Representative to the African Union and UN Economic Commission for Africa to at the AU Headquarters today.

HE Mr Elhamdi thanked the Deputy Chairperson for his warm reception and briefed him on current development in Algeria. The Ambassador informed the Deputy Chairperson that Algeria is in a consultative stage of adopting a new constitution based on balance of power.

Amb. Elhamdi further expressed concern about the worsening security situation in neighbouring, Libya and Mali while recounting the collaborative efforts of the Algerian government to help restore peace to its neighbours. He added that ‘The situation in Libya needs political solution that have to be instituted and led by the people of Libya’ and pledged the support of Algeria.

As a convinced Pan Africanist, Amb. Elhamdi registered the commitment of his country to driving the AU integration agenda and assured the Commission of the full participation of H.E the President of Algeria in the upcoming AU Summit in February.

H.E Mr. Quartey after welcoming the Ambassador back to Addis Ababa, extolled the Pan African credentials of Algeria and commended the government and people for the matured and exemplary manner they have handled their recent challenges. He made particular, mention of the various demonstrations that the country has witnessed that was conduct in a peaceful manner.

Mr. Quartey applauded the government for leading the consultative process on the new constitution. He added that respect for rule of law should be the bedrock on which the new constitution is built.

The Deputy Chairperson as wished the Amb. Salah Francis Alhamdi a successful tour of duty whiles offering him his unreserved cooperation.
