Background information.
The African Regional Mining Forum will provide a platform to diverse stakeholders to discuss these emerging and recurrent policy issues. The Forum will, in particular, focus on the future we want for the African mineral sector. The event will provide an opportunity for the African Union Commission and the implementing partners of the AMV to stir a reflective discussion about key achievements and milestones achieved by AMV, as a stepping stone towards ensuring the continent is equipped to tap opportunities for the future.
The forum will launch a regional platform, where African countries, regional organizations and continental institutions will discuss issues of strategic importance for the mining sector in Africa, and for Africa. The Forum will provide space to generate common, strategic positions and explore homegrown policy actions for mineral-rich African economies. It will also facilitate peer-learning and knowledge exchange between African countries on the management of mineral resources for sustainable development, with a view to deepen the effectiveness and impact of mining sector reforms.
It is ten years since African Heads of States adopted the African Union’s African Mining Vision. In this Vision, the continent’s considerable mineral endowments were recognized as a key driver for structural transformation, industrialization and sustained growth. New uses are being found for hitherto low valued minerals; advances in technology are radically altering the methods of production and the products required, with implications for patterns of trade, such as renewable energy technologies and products and the unfolding shift from fossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles, et al. Equally important, greater knowledge of the continent’s minerals endowment are turning traditional agricultural societies to mining economies overnight.
This rapid growth in mining and exploration across our continent has also brought into sharp focus the rights and treatment of impacted communities as contained in the AMV, but with new challenges and the need for nuanced win-win solutions.
