In the context of its efforts to mobilize resources in support of the Peace Fund, the Executive Management Committee (EMC) of the AU Peace Fund in collaboration with the Bureau of the African Union Staff Association launched on 7th June 2024 an initiative for voluntary contribution from African Union staff in the activities of the Peace Fund, thereby enhancing its ownership. This initiative would be a catalyst for other regional and continent as well as global institutions to follow suit.

The expected outputs of the resource mobilization event are to:

  • Establishing ownership of the African Union Peace Fund by its staff and the entire continent.
  • Securing voluntary support and commitments through continued contributions to the African Union Peace Fund by the staff of the African Union Commission and beyond.
  • Increased ownership and understanding of the African Union Peace fund vision and its operation.
  • Supplement the existing resources of the Peace Fund through voluntary staff contributions.
  • Serve as a pilot initiative for broader engagement, eventually involving other AU organs, African institutions, and global partners.

Ms. Dagmawit Moges Bekele, Director AU Peace Funds noted that the increased funding for the AU Peace Fund, will contribute in enhancing the AU’s capacity to address peace and security challenges. She further said that the “AU Peace Fund is taking the lead in mobilizing resources from the private sector, partners, high net worth individuals and African based institutions”.

Mr. Nouhou Thiam, President of the AU Staff Association emphasized “The African Union Staff Association is encouraging its members to provide their contributions voluntarily to Peace Fund. There will be no minimum amount or maximum level of contribution. All shall be implemented in a voluntary manner”.

The launch of the Voluntary Contribution to the Peace Fund through the AU Staff Association is a powerful demonstration of personal commitment of the staff of the African union to peace and security in Africa. By participating in this initiative, AU staff members will contribute directly to the realization of a stable and prosperous continent. This initiative also sets the stage for broader engagement and support, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Peace Fund.
