H.E. MRS. ROSE K. SAKALA

AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA TO ETHIOPIA AND THE AFRICAN UNION, AND CHAIR OF THE SPECIALIZED TECHNICAL COMMITTEE ON MIGRATION, REFUGEES AND INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS

ON THE OCCASION OF THE LAUNCH OF THE SECOND EDITION OF THE AFRICA MIGRATION REPORT

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

26TH MARCH 2024

Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with great honor that I stand before you today in my capacity as the Chair of the Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Migration, Refugees, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). This esteemed statutory body serves as the steering force behind the African Union's overarching migration governance framework. The STC also has a pivotal role in harmonizing policies and addressing the multifaceted challenges and opportunities that arise from migration across our diverse Continent.

We gather here today for a momentous occasion – the launch of the Africa Migration Report, Second Edition (AMRII), titled "Connecting the Threads: Linking Policy, Practice and the Welfare of the African Migrant." This landmark report is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the African Union Commission and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to promote a balanced and well-informed narrative on African migration.

Within the pages of this report, we find a comprehensive and compelling analysis of the current migration dynamics in Africa. Shedding light on the intricate threads that interweave policy formulation, practical implementation, and the overall welfare of African migrants are dimensions, which characterize the 2nd Edition report. The report underscores the vital contributions of migrants to the economic, social, and cultural fabric of our nations, while also highlighting the imperative of upholding their rights, dignity, and well-being.

As we delve into the findings and recommendations of this report, we must seize this opportunity to reinforce the African Union's steadfast commitment to regional integration, as enshrined in Agenda 2063. By fostering a deeper understanding of migration patterns and their implications, we can better align our policies and practices to accelerate the realization of a united, prosperous, and inclusive Africa.

The STC on Migration, Refugees, and IDPs stands ready to accompany and support Member States in translating the insights from this report into actionable policies and strategies. Together, we can weave a tapestry of hope, unity, and shared prosperity for all Africans, regardless of their origins or destinations.

I eagerly anticipate the discussions and constructive engagements that will emerge from this esteemed gathering, as we collectively chart a course towards a more just, humane, and prosperous Africa for all.

Thank you.
