Objective To Release the Mission’s Preliminary Findings and Conclusions of the conduct of the 2018 General Elections in Eswatini

Background:
Following the invitation of the Kingdom of Eswatini, H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, deployed an African Union Election Observation Mission to assess and report on the electoral process.

The African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) is led by H.E. James Alix Michel, former President of the Republic of Seychelles. The Mission comprises 30 short-term observers (STOs) drawn from members of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Elections Management Bodies, Academia, Think Tanks, Civil Society and independent electoral experts in Africa.

The Mission's mandate is to observe the elections in line with relevant African Union instruments, being the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance adopted in 2007 and which entered into force in 2012, the AU/OAU Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, the 2002 African Union Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring Missions, the 2005 Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation as well as the Zimbabwe legal framework in the holding of the Harmonised Election in the Republic of Zimbabwe.
The AUEOM is engaged in this election so as to present a fair, independent, objective and impartial assessment of the electoral process.
