Safeguarding Africa’s health: update on actions in response to recent Ebola outbreaks
In January 2015, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) endorsed the establishment of a public health institute dedicated to the African continent. The purpose of this new organization, known as the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), is to reduce sickness and death by improving prevention, detection, and response to public health threats. The AU Member States will be the direct beneficiaries of the Africa CDC. By supporting African countries in their efforts to monitor the public’s health, respond to emergencies, address complex health challenges, and build needed capacity, the Africa CDC will help close dangerous gaps in Africa’s public health systems.
The African Union is commemorating the World Refugee Day on 20th June of every year. This year, the AU is also marking the 50th anniversary of the 1969 OAU Refugee Convention and the 10th anniversary of the 2009 AU Convention on the Protection and Assistance for Internally Displaced Persons in Africa. African Union Commission organizes events to salute the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees and other forcibly displaced people. In solidarity with them, at a time when more and more people in Africa and elsewhere are being forced from their homes by conflict, persecution and other causes, we are coming together to honour their resilience and determination.
