Excellencies Ambassadors, Ministers, ladies and Gentlemen

As we draw the curtains on this historic Continental Conference on Transforming STEM in Africa, I am filled with a profound sense of accomplishment and anticipation for the future. This conference has been a testament to our collective commitment to empowering Africa’s youth and driving sustainable development through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Over the past 3 days, we have engaged in stimulating discussions, shared innovative ideas, and forged invaluable partnerships. The STEM Experience Hub has been a vibrant hub of innovation, where students and educators alike have had the opportunity to explore cutting-edge technologies such as AI, robotics, and 3D printing. It is truly inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and creativity of our young minds.

Our thematic tracks have delved deep into critical and pertinent issues for transforming STEM in Africa, that include strengthening the foundations of STEM education, advancing gender equality and inclusion, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and promoting STEM financing and partnerships. The high-level dialogues, featuring esteemed ministers from Ethiopia, Liberia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, and Heads of development partner organizations have provided invaluable insights and strategic direction to Africa’s future STEM.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the African Union Commission for hosting this momentous event and to in particular to H.E. Prof. Mohammed Belhocine for his guidance. We are equally indebted to our esteemed technical partners, who have worked tirelessly alongside UNESCO to bring

this conference to fruition. Our sincere thanks also go to our generous funders, whose support has made this conference possible. Huge thanks to the UNESCO Team from Paris (Justine Sass and Imteyaz Khodabux), Harare (Martiale Zebaze), and our own team in Addis Ababa (under the leadership of Mr Hambani Masheleni) who have been working tirelessly for the past 6 months.

As we conclude this conference, I urge all participants to embrace the spirit of collaboration and innovation. Let us work together to implement the recommendations outlined in the Addis Ababa Communiqué. By investing in STEM education, fostering research and development, and empowering our youth and women, we can unlock Africa’s full potential and build a brighter future for generations to come.

Thank you all for your invaluable contributions. I look forward to witnessing the transformative impact of this conference in the years to come.

Let us continue to inspire, innovate, and empower Africa through STEM!

I thank you
