Maputo, Mozambique, 12 October 2019- His Excellency Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), has arrived in Maputo. Upon his arrival, Mr. Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan held a meeting with the short-term observers where he emphasized the importance of the elections in Mozambique for the ongoing peace process. He urged the observers to maintain highest standards of professionalism, integrity and impartiality.

Preceding his arrival, a two-day orientation and briefing programme for African Union Election Observers Mission (AUEOM) was started from 12-13 October 2019. The briefing focuses on the political context of the election, such as the preparations by National Elections Commission; the level of preparedness ahead of the polls; the Legal framework for elections in Mozambique; political context of the 2019 elections in Mozambique; and other presentations from different stakeholders in Mozambique and the African Union (AU) election observation methodology. The briefing aims at enabling observers to have a better understanding and appreciation of the conduct of the 2019 Mozambique Elections (i.e. Presidential, Parliamentary, and Provincial Elections) before their deployment.

His Excellency Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan will interact with key stakeholders in Mozambique (i.e. Chairperson of National Elections Commission, Political Party Leaders, Civil Society, Head of International Observation Missions, Diplomatic Corps, etc.) ahead of the presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections scheduled to hold on 15 October 2019.

The AUEOM will release a statement on its preliminary findings on the conduct of the elections at a press conference to be held on October 17, 2019 at Polana Serena Hotel. The venue and time of the press conference will be communicated in due course.
