The African Union Commission and the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 7th June 2024 to ensure comprehensive medical coverage for staff of the African Union and their dependents across various locations in Africa as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps based in Addis Ababa. This strategic partnership reflects a shared commitment to maintaining and enhancing the well-being of all individuals involved.

Dr Adamu Isah, Director, Medical and Health Services, emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership, stating that “The partnership with AMREF, as a reliable and long-standing partner, highlights the importance of collaborative relationships in delivering essential and emergency medical care. The provision of medical, surgical, and emergency air ambulance services will undoubtedly benefit the staff of the African Union and their dependents, as well as the Diplomats in times of need,” the Director of Medical and Health Services underscored. He further noted that “The emphasis on regional and linguistic balance in these efforts reflects a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for all staff members”.

Dr Joseph Lelo, Director at AMREF Flying Doctors, and AMREF Country Director (Ethiopia), Ms. Misrak Makonnen, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with African Union Commission, indicating that the MOU is marking a new era of collaboration to ensure comprehensive medical coverage for AU Commission staff and their dependents across various locations.

African Union’s (AU) Legal Counsel, Prof. Hajer Gueldich, who was present during the ceremony, congratulated all on reaching this milestone, and expressed her best wishes for the successful implementation of the agreements and the continued improvement of medical services within the African Union.

The African Union Commission’s Medical and Health Services assessment missions to different African countries for the identification of excellent hospitals and air ambulance services demonstrate a proactive approach towards enhancing healthcare services.
