The African Union Commission, Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department (PAPS) through the AGA-APSA Secretariat, is holding a National Training of Trainers (TOT) program on youth participation in Political and Electoral processes in Zimbabwe from 6th-10th June 2022 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The five-day program aims to empower young people to meaningfully engage in the electoral process of the Republic of Zimbabwe as the country ramps up preparation for its elections. The training is expected to enable young people to have an understanding of their countries’ electoral cycle, to map barriers and innovative ways to expand youth’s role in the electoral and political processes.

The TOT is based on a capacity building program that was built on the African Union’s Training of Trainers’ Manuals on Youth Participation in Political and Electoral Processes in Africa, developed under the auspices of the AGA-APSA Youth Engagement Strategy.  The manual was designed to enhance the capacity of youth in Africa to contribute to meaningful youth engagement in electoral and political processes.

Championed by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation of the Republic of Zimbabwe and development partners, the training program brought on board a diverse group of young people from all regions of the Republic hailing from diverse political affiliation, media, universities, disability groups, and representative of disabled youth. After completing the TOT these young people will be certified trainers and will take up the responsibility to cascade their knowledge and skills to train other young people.

The ZEC in collaboration with local partners has invested to provide more TOT’s programs using the African Union Manual on Youth in Participation in electoral and political processes. Additionally, the ZEC has committed for a selected well-performing trainees to be involved as part of the team of master trainers. Subsequent training of trainers supported by the ZEC and its partners is scheduled to take place from 13-15 June 2022 in Bulawayo and Kariba from 11-13 July 2022 in the Republic of Zimbabwe.
