BACKGROUND

The African Union Commission, in collaboration with the Democratic Republic of Congo, is set to showcase the successes of the 1 Million by 2021 initiative and the impact of this initiative on Africa’s youth during a virtual event.

Since its launch in 2019 by the AUC Chairperson H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, the 1 Million by 2021 initiative has inspired investments in African youth across ‘the 4 E’s’: Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Engagement. With support from private and public sector partners, the 1 Million by 2021 initiative made significant progress, reaching over eight (8) million young people between 2019 and 2021.

The event aims to show progress and results of the 1 Million by 2021 initiative on the sidelines of the 35th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly. The event will highlight and showcase investment opportunities towards accelerating gains of the 1

Million by 2021 initiative; and broker strategic connections among youth, countries, and partners, to drive innovation in the five key program areas; Education, Engagement, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Health and Wellbeing. In addition, the launch will highlight lessons learned and provide recommendations on priority areas to maintain the momentum of the 1 Million by 2021 Initiative.
