High Level Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Africa.

Scaling up action for transformation.

What: The High Level Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Africa.

Who: The meeting will be addressed by Heads of State and Government; African Union Commission Chairperson; United Nations Secretary General among other senior officials.

When: Saturday, 8th February 2020.

Time: 0800 hours.

Venue: Sheraton hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Background: The High Level meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa will bring together African Heads of State and Government; the African Union, key institutions, in charge of promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, the private sector, senior women leaders in different sectors and youth leaders to coordinate innovative, constructive and cooperative actions to accelerate the implementation of impactful delivery of gender equality and women’s empowerment initatives.
The leadership of the African Union Commission has identified women’s economic empowerment as a priority for the decade 2020 to 2030. The intended outcome of this high-level meeting will be a declaration of commitment to be delivered to the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government during the summit, to guide actions in the realization of this goal.
During the meeting, the AU Commission and UNECA will also launch the African Women Leaders Fund, an initiative aimed at scaling up and adequately financing the solutions-oriented undertakings by African women and girls, towards the transformation of the continent.
