Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 21 October 2019: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat held discussions with a high level AU UN delegation led by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Ms Amina Mohammed in Addis Abeba today.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General briefed the Chairperson of the the Joint AU UN Solidarity Mission that she was leading to Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan and its priorities regarding the participation of women in issues of peace and security.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction with strategic partnership between the two institutions as outlined in the AU-UN peace and security and development framework agreements signed in April 2017.

While recognizing Peace, Security and Development in Africa as priorities for both organizations, the two officials called for the need to promote a multilateral and holistic approach as well as the full involvement of women in tackling these issues.

Both leaders agreed on the necessity to involve the Youth as active participants to promote a culture of peacebuilding and nonviolence.

In conclusion the Chairperson wished the Joint AU/ UN Solidarity Mission success and both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate in delivering a shared viision.

The AU -UN High level Mission to the Horn of Africa is co-led by Amina Mohamed, Deputy Secretary General of the UN, and Minata Samate, Commissioner for Political Affairs of the AUC, and Bineta Diop, AU Special Envoy on Women Peace and Security.

The Delegation is accompanied by senior AU and UN Officials, including, HE Phumzile Mlambo –Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women, H.E.Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of UNECA, HE Hannah Tetteh, Head of UNOAU, Ms. Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in conflict.
