Addis Ababa, 28 January 2018– The Office of the Legal Counsel of the African Union Commission (AUC) is pleased to announce the Election of Ms. Amal Mahmoud Ammar (Egypt) as Member of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption for a two (2) - Year term. She was elected as a member of the Board during the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council held 25-26 January 2018, Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
The African Union Advisory Board is established under Article 22 of the AU Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption. The functions of the Board are, inter alia, to: promote and encourage adoption and application of anti-corruption measures on the continent; collect and document information on the nature and scope of corruption and related offences in Africa, and advise governments on how to deal with the scourge of corruption and related offences in their domestic jurisdictions. Accordingly, the Board works closely with national governments, anti-corruption authorities, and civil society.
The Election took place following the Decision of the Assembly EX.CL/1038(XXXI), July 2017 on the Appointment of the four Members of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption that, “the remaining one member will be elected at the thirty second Ordinary Session of the Executive Council only from among the Female Candidates from the North Region…”. Towards that end, the Legal Counsel conducted the Election of the remaining member of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption based on the provisions of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption and the Rules of Procedure of the Executive Council on the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council.
Ms. Amal Mahmoud Ammar won the Election with a majority of 52 votes and became the 4th Member of the Board. We take this opportunity to congratulate her and to wish her well in this important assignment.
