Registration should be done in advance. After registration, a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting is sent to the participant.

Why:The Symposium, to be held as part of the Commemoration of 2024 Africa Day seeks to explore ways to foster critical thinking on African history, examine the preconceived notions and historical omissions that all too often accompany teaching and learning on Africa, while encouraging exploration of Africa's economic future. This will be tied to current events, including on the Intra-Africa and international contacts and trade both from a historical perspective and the implementation of African Continental Free Trade Area, while fostering integration. Coming at a time when Africa has Launched Education as the AU theme of the year 2024, the role of educators on designing meaningful, impactful learning experiences which challenge mindsets will be foregrounded.

Who:The Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (ESTI) department of the AU Commission in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Objectives:

1. To develop a comprehensive understanding of the diverse histories, cultures, and achievements of African nations.

2. To promote a sense of unity, pride, and identity among African students.

a. To Explore innovative pedagogical approaches and methodologies for teaching African history

3. To Identify and address challenges and barriers to the effective teaching and learning of African history.

4. To encourage critical thinking, research, and reflection on Africa's history and its implications for future development.

Expected Outcomes:

1. Deeper understanding of the significance and importance of integrating the teaching and learning of African history into education systems.

2. Cultural awareness and appreciation of African heritage with a deep appreciation for the diverse cultures, languages, and traditions that exist across the continent.

3. A broader perspective on the continent's development on the importance of addressing issues such as poverty, inequality, and governance in order to achieve Africa's renaissance and integration.

4. Inspiration and motivation to become agents of change on the continent, by being empowered to take on leadership roles and contribute towards Africa's growth, integration, and development.

5. Opportunities to generate new ideas and perspectives on how to address contemporary challenges, through creative thinking, and to contribute innovative solutions to the continent's development.
