Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 6 April 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat will be on official visit to Rwanda on 7- 8 April 2017 for the Commemoration of the Rwanda Genocide, and to consult with President Paul Kagame on the implementation of the AU reforms.

The Commemoration of the Rwanda Genocide takes place on 7 April in remembrance of all victims of the Genocide which took place in 1994. The atrocities of the genocide are remembered and the importance of working towards a peaceful Rwanda and prevent such horrendous atrocities in the future. This commemoration encompasses the continent’s aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous Africa.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission will also meet with the President of Rwanda, H.E. Paul Kagame about the progress of the implementation of the AU Assembly’s Decision on the institutional reforms. It may be recalled that President Kagame presented a report on proposed reforms that would guide the establishment of a governance system capable of addressing challenges facing the AU at the 28th Ordinary African Union Heads of State and Government Summit in January 2017.

President Kagame was assigned by Heads of State and Government to come up with reform proposals for the AU as part of transforming it into a self-reliant continental body by 2018.
