The Chairperson of the African Union Commission H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has learnt with profound sadness another tragic loss of an estimated 70 African migrants, mainly from Ethiopia in the Red Sea Coast of Yemen. According to Yemeni authorities, the boat sank on 6 December 2014, after encountering rough waves and violent winds.

Dr. Dlamini Zuma expresses her deepest condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the bereaved. She further expressed grave concern regarding the recurrence of these preventable tragedies, and therefore urges the relevant authorities to investigate these incidents. She also calls on all Member States and other Governments to work together to reduce loss of lives among people making sea voyages across the Red Sea and other major sea frontiers.

The Chairperson is dismayed by the fact that statistically more migrants have died at sea this year than the past three years combined, with the majority of the victims being Africans. This latest incident coming almost 14 months after about 359 migrants lost their lives off the coast of Lampedusa is a poignant reminder of the challenges of irregular migration. Dr. Dlamini Zuma said all must be done to stop this.

She notes the recent accusations levelled against UNAMID in the discharge of its mandate.

The Chairperson of the Commission recalls that UNAMID is operating in a difficult environment, characterised by sporadic clashes among the armed belligerents, inter-tribal fighting and huge logistical challenges compounded by the large size of the area of operation and the lack of adequate infrastructure. She stresses that, in spite of these challenges, UNAMID is making a tremendous contribution to the search for peace in Darfur. In this respect, she commends the Mission for the steps taken towards the protection of civilians, the facilitation of humanitarian assistance and support to peace-building activities on the ground.

The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates AU's full support to UNAMID and her deep appreciation to the Mission's leadership and personnel for their commitment and untiring efforts. She reaffirms the AU's commitment to continue working with the Government of Sudan and other concerned actors to create the best possible conditions for the full implementation of UNAMID mandate, which will lead to its eventual exit from Sudan. She expresses AU's determination to fully play its role in the management of UNAMID, in line with the hybrid nature of the Mission.

The Chairperson of the Commission looks forward to the outcome of the ongoing strategic review assessment mission jointly conducted by the United Nations and the AU. She is confident that the assessment will facilitate efforts aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the support extended to the Sudanese stakeholders in their quest for lasting peace and reconciliation.

The Chairperson of the Commission calls on the UN Security Council and other members of the international community to fully support UNAMID and to avail the resources it needs to complete the implementation of the important tasks entrusted to it. She stresses that UNAMID, which is the first ever hybrid operation between the AU and the United Nations, is a vivid example of the commitment of the two organisations to build an innovative and forward-looking partnership that is responsive to the complex peace and security challenges facing the continent.

AU Commission Chairperson commends Equatorial Guinea’s acceptance to host 2015 AFCON, calls on all to avail support for a successful tournament

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - 14 November, 2014: African Union Commission Chairperson H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma commends the Government of Equatorial Guinea for its strong show of African Solidarity demonstrated by its acceptance to host the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in January 2015.

CAF President Issa Hayatou made the announcement on Friday 14 November 2014, following a meeting with Equatorial Guinea President H.E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema. Initial host of 2015 AFCON, Morocco had requested CAF to postpone the coveted competition in 2015, amidst fears of the Ebola Virus Disease.

“The Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone should not paralyse continental programs and events. Like many other challenges the continent has faced in the past, the Ebola outbreak is being surmounted and is by no means a reason to stall the African Cup of Nations.” African Union Commission Chair H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said after receiving the announcement of Equatorial Guinea to host the much awaited continental and global event.

The AU and CAF share common Pan African values and are deeply aware that the common wellbeing and prosperity of the continent is paramount. Meeting with the AUC Chairperson in September in Addis Ababa, CAF Executive Committee, led by its President Issa Hayatou expressed its strong support to contribute to fight against the Ebola Virus Disease.

However, Africa cannot afford to be swayed by each and every challenge the continent faces and is at a point where it faces new and old challenges, like the Ebola crisis, the threat of terrorism and conflicts.

“Football is a unique unifying force of our continent and the world. We look forward to once again, coming together and celebrating Africa together in the exhilarating 2015 AFCON tournament in Equatorial Guinea,” Dr. Dlamini Zuma said.

The AU reiterates its commitment to support CAF and the host in its preparations for the tournament, and calls upon Member States and the international community to avail Equatorial Guinea and all the participating nations all the necessary and adequate support and screening facilities.

“We should remember that we have fought and defeated many tragedies including HIV/AIDS whose spread has been significantly halted. We will defeat Ebola.” Dr. Dlamini Zuma reassured.
