    OPENING CEREMONY OF THE MEETING OF THE PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL AT PRESIDENTIAL LEVEL

    A meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) at the level of Heads of State and Government is scheduled to take place on 14 July 2012, at 09:30 a.m. in the Plenary Hall of the AU Conference Center (Old Building).

    The meeting will consider the following items:

    - Report of the Chairperson of the Commission on the situation in Mali
    - Report of the Chairperson of the Commission on the follow-up to the PSC Communiqué of 24 April 2012 on the situation between Sudan and South Sudan

    PRESS CONFERENCE FOR THE SIGNATURE OF A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE AU AND THE CONFEDERATION OF AFRICAN FOOTBALL

    Within the framework of the 19th AU summit, the African Union, on Saturday 14 July 2012 at 09h00, sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Confederation of African Football in Plenary Hall of the old AU Conference Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

    The signing ceremony will be followed by the launch of the 2013 African Cup of Nations social causes campaign. Dr Jean Ping Chairperson of the AUC, H.E. Mr. Lamamra Ramtane Commissioner for Peace and Security, H.E. Adv. Bience Philomena Gawanas, Commissioner for Social Affairs, H.E. Mrs. Julia Dolly Joiner, Commissioner Political Affairs, Mr. Issa Hayatou, Confederation of African Football (CAF) and H.E. Mrs Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Foreign minister of South Africa as host of the AfCON 2013 will be in attendance.

    The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Erastus Mwencha addressed journalists at a press conference today. Mr. Mwencha, presented the main achievements of the AUC in line with its current Strategic Plan. The Plan targets four main areas: Peace and Security; Development, Integration and Strategic Partnerships; Shared Values; and Institutions and Capacity Building.The continent is on a good path to attain its objectives of integration, peace and prosperity by 2030. Among successes Mr. Mwencha mentioned the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the Program for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) and the Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality (CARMMA). The next Strategic Plan will be for the period 2014-2017 and will be a plan for the African Union and not only for the Commission.

    Media Briefing on the Upcoming Summit

    The Secretary General of the African Union Commission, Ambassador Jean Mfasoni and the Director of Information and Communication, Mrs Habiba Mejri-Cheikh briefed some media representatives on 9 July 2012 on the theme of the 19th AU Summit: “Boosting Intra-African Trade”. They also addressed the issues on facilities aimed at enabling the coverage of the summit.
    Among others issues to be discussed during the Summit, Ambassador Mfasoni mentioned democratic governance, the Peace and Security Council at presidential level on Mali and the relations between Sudan and South Sudan, the adoption of the 2013 budget and the election of the members of the AUC.
    According to Ambassador Mfasoni, the Summit will also consider the humanitarian challenges faced by the continent, assess the MDG’s, evaluate the partnerships and the outcome of the just concluded Africa Global Diaspora Summit. “The preparations for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the OAU in 2013 will be also on the agenda he added. Mrs Habiba Mejri-Cheikh on her part briefed the media on the different arrangements made by the DIC to ensure a successful coverage of the Summit. She enumerated the measures taken to provide a comfortable working environment for the journalists, the accreditation process to follow and the compliance to security measures.
