ACCELERATING INNOVATION, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, AND PROMOTING THE INVOLVEMENT OF WOMEN AND YOUTH IN AFRICA’S OCEANS AND SEAS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE OCEAN DECADE

INVITATION TO THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

 

What: A side event co-organised by the African Union and UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission in the margin of the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) being co-organised by Portugal and Kenya from 27 June – 1 July 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal. It is  the landmark ocean event regrouping decision makers, innovators, private sector actors and stakeholders to the implementation of SDG Goal 14: ‘Conserve and Sustainably Use the Oceans, Seas and Marine Resources for Sustainable Development’. And Aspiration 1 goal 6 of the Agenda 2063, the Africa we want.

Who: the African Union Commission and IOC-UNESCO

Why: The aim is to showcase and promote Africa’s blue economy and send a strong signal on Africa’s readiness to protect and sustainably develop its ocean resources as well as contribute to the global conversation on oceans by focusing on unlocking Africa’s potential for innovative, knowledge-based and high-revenue sectors while fostering sustainability and private sector activity, with further emphasis on the integration of women, youth and Africa’s scientific community within the blue economy.

The specific objectives of the side event are:

  1. Promote Africa’s Blue Economy agenda specifically the Africa Blue Economy Strategy;
  1. Promote new initiatives on Blue Economy;
  2. Promote the integration of Women and youth in Ocean Science;
  3. Identify sustainable partnerships, tools and entry points to promote innovation and sustainability in the blue economy including via the framework of the Ocean Decades;
  4. Lay the foundations to discuss ocean-based climate solutions at COP27 and ocean finance for a just transition.

Participants: The event will be attended by high level AU and UN officials, RECs, High level Delegations from the AU Members States and non-African states, the European Union delegation and different international organizations as well as other key partners.
