The 2024 Africa Sustainable Development Report (ASDR) was officially launched on 16 July 2024, on the margins of the High-Level Political Forum 2024 (#HLPF2024), organised from 8 – 17 July 2024, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA. The report is jointly produced by the African Union (AU), African Development Bank (AfDB), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

The event took place in the Mandela Conference Hall of the AU Permanent Observer Mission to the United UN, under the theme: “Progress and prospect on the implementation of Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030 for sustainable development in Africa”.

  “The 2024 Africa Sustainable Development Report reviews the status of the implementation of the two Agendas in Affrica and offers policy recommendations to facilitate their attainment. It is a call to action for all stakeholders to redouble their efforts towards achieving the sustainable development goals in alignment with the Africa Agenda 2063. By working together, we can build a brighter future for Africa and ensure that no one is left behind.” Underscored H.E Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the AU Commission.

“Over the past few years, African countries have made significant strides in advancing the sustainable development agenda. Progress has been made in areas such as poverty reduction, gender equality, access to education and healthcare, and sustainable economic growth. However, much work remains to be done to ensure that all Africans can enjoy a decent standard of living and a prosperous future”. Stated H.E Amb. Claver Gatete, Under Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the UNECA.

An Overview of the report was presented by Prof. Bartholomew Armah, Chief, Development Planning Section at the UNECA. He stressed that the report provides a comprehensive overview of the progress made in implementing both Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063, as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The report also highlights the need for continued commitment and action from all the stakeholders to drive sustainable development and economic growth on the continent.

During the panel discussion on “Development Partners and Policy Makers’ perspective on reinforcing the Implementation of the SDGs & Agenda 2063”, which was moderated by Dr. Raymond Gilpin, Chief Economist Regional Bureau for Africa, UNDP, the panellists exchanged views on innovative and sustainable solutions to moving the two Agendas forward, highlighting key initiatives including Summit of the Future.

Ms. Botho Kebabonye Bayendi, Director, Office of Strategic Planning and Delivery, African Union Commission, who was one of the panellists, reiterated the need to change the African narrative and to promote “the Africa We Want”, by bringing Agenda 2063 to the people.

Mr. Matthias Naab, Deputy Director a.i. Regional Bureau for Africa, UNDP in his concluding remarks noted that, “by working together and taking bold and decisive action, we can create a more sustainable and prosperous future for all Africans”.
